AEX ('Alta Expresión') is Covila's signature red: old-vine Tempranillo hand-picked from bush vines more than 35 years old and sorted on a selection table. Malolactic fermentation and lees ageing happen in new American and French barrels, where the wine then ages for 17 months. The 2016 notes describe a dense, black-cherry wine with red fruit, rosemary, thyme, chocolate and roasted notes, smooth tannins and a long finish.

About the producer
Bodegas Covila
Bodegas Covila was founded in 1989 by a group of grape growers in Lapuebla de Labarca, in Rioja Alavesa. It farms about 250 hectares of its own vineyards, on sites from the Ebro riverbanks up to higher villages such as Laguardia and Samaniego, and makes around 1.5 million bottles a year, from young reds through Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva.
